TALES OF DRACULA is a new independent film featuring three classic cinematic movie monsters: Dracula, The Wolfman, and Frankenstein's Monster! Intended to be a throwback to the classic monster movies created by Universal and Hammer Films, TALES OF DRACULA will deliver the typical genre elements, but brings a few new things to the table in regards to its mon-stars.
Originally intended to be a short film/pilot in the same vein as TALES OF FRANKENSTEIN, the original script, written by actor/producer/monster suit actor Joe DeMuro, has since been beefed up considerably by author/classic horror fan Dwight Kemper.
Along with special makeup f/x by the talented Ronald Chamberlain (who created the title monster in DEMON MESSENGER), this looks to be a good ole-fashioned monster romp made by classic horror fans, for classic horror fans. (And to answer your main questions, yes the film will be shot in black and white!)
Currently, the only thing missing from this winning combination is a complete cast. The producers are looking for a few good men (and women) to fill in some roles, particularly that of DRACULA. I've been following this film from its inception and I have to say that I have high hopes for it. The second draft of the script (which I just polished off) is fun and definitely has that old Universal feel, and there's a lot of talent behind the cameras on this project. Once the cast is nailed down, TALES OF DRACULA is set to go into production hopefully by the end of March. ARMY is a slapstick medieval fantasy adventure featuring Bruce Campbell as the hapless ASHLEY J. WILLIAMS. His only chance is the Necronomicon, the Book of the Dead. Ash must retrieve it after reciting some magic words, but naturally he botches things and soon an army of skeletons, led by his undead twin, rises up and marches after the loud braggart from the future. It's a great "crowd movie" full of memorable one-liners, great music, and lots of old school f/x! HAIL TO THE KING BABY!
TCM2 is a dark comedy featuring your fave Texas Chainsaw Massacre characters doing what they do best: Killing folks, hacking them up, and turning them into award winning chili! I'm not personally a huge fan of this sequel, but it does have its moments: Bill Moseley's Chop Top is an extremely memorable character, and how can you forget the epic chainsaw duel between a crazed Dennis Hopper (I AM THE LORD OF THE HARVEST!) and Leatherface?
There will be two other films screened at the show but they have yet to be announced, and as always, there will be vendors, contests with cool prizes, and kick-ass 35mm trailer reels that will roll before each movie in the film fest! This is all conjecture on my part based off of an e-mail received from the Fright-Rags mailing list, so when I get official details, I'll type up a quick post and confirm (or discredit) my guesses! I'm pretty damned sure I'm right on, though I am perplexed by the "we're going on a tour of destruction with the ultimate band of killers" portion of the MARCH MADNESS teaser.... Band of killers? Could they have an original design featuring all of our fave slasher villains in a rock group? I guess we'll all find out soon enough!

During these 19 exhibition, we did the themes of the university, tolerance, picaresque, North America, third millennium, film, inventions, sports, Quixote, road safety, equality, gender violence, the recycling, education, childhood, motherhood, food and crisis. On the occasion of this 20th anniversary, we ask help choosing the theme of this year so special. We hope your suggestions via the web, e-mail, Twitter or Facebook before 10 March. We will choose the most requested item, or we will vote later with several of them.
“Man was originally endowed with noble powers and a well-balanced mind. He was perfect in his being, and in harmony with God. His thoughts were pure, his aims holy. But through disobedience his powers were perverted, and selfishness took the place of love. His nature became so weakened through transgression that it was impossible for him, in his own strength, to resist the power of evil...[A]fter his sin he could no longer find joy in holiness, and he sought to hide from the presence of God...Education, culture, the exercise of the will, human effort, all have their proper sphere, but here they are powerless. They may produce an outward correctness of behavior, but they can not change the heart; they cannot purify the springs of life. There must be a power working from within, a new life from above, before man can be changed from sin to holiness. That power is Christ...” Imagine my surprise upon first reading that, and noting that the writer was Ellen G. White, pioneer of the Sabbatarian Adventist movement, later known as the Seventh Day Adventist Church! Lent, with its disciplines of prayer, fasting, and outreach to those in need, fosters an awareness of our utter need of God. In American society most everyone makes use of some sort of professional service(s): whether it’s shopping for clothes, requesting a bank loan, seeing a counselor, buying a new car. In each of these experiences you and I hear some form of the following questions: “How may I help you?”, “What can I do for you?”, “What is it you want?” In light of today’s Scripture readings, the question, “What is it that I want?”, seems terribly relevant. How would you or I respond to Jesus if he were to come here today, to sit down and spend time with us, giving each one of us, personally, ten minutes to answer his question: “What can I do for you? What do you really want?”
In the first reading (Genesis 15:1-12;17-18), Abram asks point-blank a question which also includes includes a hint of an expected answer: “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” According to Paul, in the second reading (Philippians 3:17-4:1), Abram seems to have had his mind “set on earthly things”. The barrenness of Sarai and Abram’s having no children, no offspring, was, in his culture, a humiliation and a sign interpreted as God’s disfavor. Children were terribly important: to carry on the family and its name; to oversee and pass down family possessions; to increase, and thus give the family power and prestige in society. Eliezer, Abram’s slave, was designated as his heir. The Nuzi tablets, discovered between 1925-1931 in modern-day Iraq, shed light on this adoption custom by a childless couple. In the ancient Akkadian culture a slave would be chosen to look after the patriarch and his wife in their old age, and to provide for their burial in return for the slave’s endowment.
Taking Abram outdoors, God tells him: “You’re worried about the wrong thing. I’ve got something you really want: a son”. “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them...So shall your descendants be.” Plus, God throws in all the land onto which Abram has migrated. With faith in God, yet still pressing his luck a little bit, Abram asks: “...how am I to know that I shall possess it?...Give me a sign!” God does Abram one better than just a sign. He has Abram bring the sacrifice of a heifer, a she-goat, a ram, a turtledove, and a pigeon: each cut in two and laid on the ground. Once the sun had set, says the Genesis writer, Abram was cast into “a deep sleep”, “and a deep and terrifying darkness descended on him...”, and “a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between these pieces...”
The Covenant, between God and human beings, is at the heart of the message of the Hebrew Scriptures. Covenants were a commonplace in patriarchal society, and could range from international treaties to contracts among people in ordinary life. To ratify the terms, contracting parties would split sacrificial animals in two and then pass through the divided parts, symbolizing that they were calling down a similar destruction on themselves, should they be unfaithful to the covenant.
For God to make a covenant with a human being was astounding. While other covenants were, more or less, between equal parties, in this case it was the human party who was in utter need before the divine Being. The Genesis writer says simply: “On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram.” God’s assurances, however, included some “bad news” along with some “good news”. Verses 13-16, not included in today’s reading, reveal that Abram’s posterity would be strangers in a foreign land; they would experience slavery and oppression for some 400 years. But the “good news” was that God would bring judgment on the Canaanites; he would free the Hebrews, giving them “great possessions”; and Abram would pass on “in peace”, “at a good old age”. God’s greatest assurance to Abram was that, in all of this, God is and will be there for Abram. It’s a promise. No matter what happens, God will be faithful to the agreement. So Abram, who thought that he wanted only an assurance of children and land, got much, much more: God’s enduring friendship and presence; a great people to follow him and build the nation -- and all because “he believed the Lord”.
St. Paul comments on this in his letter to the Romans (4:16-5:5): “For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham... Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become ‘the father of many nations’,...He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith...being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith ‘was reckoned to him as righteousness.’ Now the words, ‘it was reckoned to him’, were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead,...Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ...because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us.” Paul puts his finger on what it is that you and I really want: God’s love, God’s presence, God’s Spirit: for us.
In the Philippians passage, Paul indicates that when people lack faith, such as Abram’s, it becomes normal for them to want what is destructive. He speaks of “the belly”, i.e., things, physical or intellectual, to feed upon in the hope of being fulfilled: food and drink; the latest gossip; superior knowledge which one can wield over others, or for feeding one’s pride. He talks about “their shame”, i.e., the insatiable lusts of body, mind, or spirit which end up “eating” us alive. He mentions “earthly things”, i.e., anything which can draw us away or distract us from the Creator of all. Jesus the Christ and his lived message of the Cross is an embarrassment to such people, something abnormal. Sadly, for Paul who had fought so hard for his own faith, he’s speaking here about some within his own Christian community itself, to the point that he speaks “even with tears”. He reminds all who claim to follow Jesus that “our citizenship”, our true loyalty, “is in heaven”: “we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ...”
Paul wants all those in the community of faith, including us, to sustain and be sustained by each other’s example, to show in our lives what it is that each of us really wants and can attain by God’s gift. The pathos and sadness which Paul feels for members of his own community, who seem to prefer selfish priorities and willfully reject Christ by their attitudes and actions, mirrors Jesus’ sentiments in the Gospel as he looks out over the city of Jerusalem, the “city of peace”.
Two striking images jump out at us from Luke’s Gospel (13:31-35): those of stoning and those of gathering. Jerusalem, for all its sacredness, for all its being preeminently “God’s place”, the place of the Covenant, is at the same time a violent and vengeful place. Its inhabitants have grown smug and self-reliant. They consider it blasphemy when holy prophets come in and accuse them of faithlessness. How dare they?! “Abraham is our father!” (John 8:53) Yet God consistently sends prophets to call people to accountability, to rightness with God, and, by contrast with the macho way Jerusalem treats strangers, God does so with a tenderness, nurturing and wisdom that’s truly maternal. “How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings...”
So, the question remains: “What do you [and I] want?” Some, in both Jesus’ and Paul’s time, willfully choose themselves, their interests, things, in place of God. Yet some also, like Abram and Paul, though so human and prone to waver, still believe and get much more than they ever asked for or imagined.
Peter Gomes, of Harvard’s Divinity School, says: “Resistance to the Gospel is to be expected.” That’s fairly clear from the Bible, from history, and from our own experience. Yet, God continues to pursue us despite our stonewalling, even in the face of our rejection and unfaith. God is unwilling to let us go, even when we “were not willing”.

I fled Him, down the labyrinthine ways
Of my own mind...”
writes Francis Thompson, in his moving poem, The Hound of Heaven.
He then has God say:
“Alack, thou knowest not
How little worthy of any love thou art!
Whom wilt thou find to love ignoble thee,
Save Me, save only Me?...”

"Yawn!" Alien abduction horror Dark Skies is "boring", not scary, say movie critics.
Now showing in US cinemas, the alien abduction horror Dark Skies is taking a kicking from movie critics who are describing it as “bland,” “banal,” and “boring.”
Writing for io9.com, reviewer Rob Bricken’s only take-home message from the film is that “Aliens are dicks.”
Bricken notes that “Dark Skies contains more snores than scares... and definitely nothing you haven't already seen in pretty much any other alien horror flick.”
What was marketed as a powerful family drama with supernatural / sci-fi overtones “just slowly deflates into a by-the-numbers horror flick you'd be better off skipping in theaters and on home video.”
Bricken concludes: “As a viewer, I left the theater bored and somewhat annoyed. If I were an alien, though, I'd have been downright offended.”
Dark Skies– which stole (yes stole) its title from the completely unrelated and far superior UFO-themed‘90s TV series of the same name – is currently scoring just 36% on RottenTomatoes.com.
Peter Sobczynski of the Chicago Sun-Times calls Dark Skies “a bore that even the most forgiving genre buffs will find difficult to defend or endure.”
Writing for the New York Daily News, Elizabeth Weitzman was similarly uninspired by the film: “It's not that Dark Skies is so awful you need to be warned away from it. It's just that it's so bland you might as well find something better to do.”
Entertainment Weekly’s Clark Collis, meanwhile, writes: “Sci-fi and horror fans know to keep watching the skies – but they won't be missing too much if they decide to skip this.”
For those who are insistent on forking out their hard-earned cash this month on sci-fi drama by the name of Dark Skies, give the cinema a miss... Your money will be far better spenthere.
Danny Granger, former all-star and poster boy for the Indiana Pacers made his return to the court after missing the whole season with a knee injury. While he only played 19 minutes, and went 1-10 from the field(presumably there would be a little rust), he teammates reacted as if he made the game winning shot, even though the 15-footer put them up 20 early in the 4th quarter.
I am personally in the camp that believe this was definitely pre-meditated, but I think we are all in the camp that this was hilarious.

This is one of those weekends where you can take a break from the cinema as there isn't much out there worth spending ten+ dollars on. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson delivers another hardcore PG-13 action film that is supposedly based on a true story, and a new PG-13 supernatural/alien abduction type flick looks to make a tiny dent in the weekend box office. (I'm guessing it'll debut in the top five, probably at number two or three. Then again, every new Horror/thriller this year has debuted at number one in the box office, so DARK SKIES may be a surprise hit.)
So here's your first choice if you're really bored and want to take in a flick. "The Rock" goes after some drug dealers to save his kid from getting the proverbial book thrown at him for "unknowingly" delivering some drugs. To save his son from ten years in the pen, "The Rock" agrees to infiltrate a drug cartel and help the feds make arrests. This of course leads to DRAMA, EXPLOSIONS, HEARTFELT YELLING, ANGRY YELLING, and GUNFIGHTS! If anything, it looks like a solid rental; check out the trailer below and judge for yourself:
The other latest theatrical release is DARK SKIES, the tale of a family that is experiencing all sorts of strange phenomena, like legions of suicidal birds, the sudden appearance of strange tattoos, horrifying yawning, and uncontrollable head-banging. It seems like they are trying to push this as a supernatural thriller, but it's clearly an alien abduction movie. Haven't made up my mind about it, but if I do watch it, I'll be renting the DVD five months from now. Behold the trailer:

Released in cinemas last week, Escape from Planet Earthhas received generally negative reviews from critics, scoring a measly 27% on RottenTomatoes.comat the time of writing. The children’s film -- which sees aliens escape from Area 51 -- has so far grossedapproximately $23 million against its $40 million budget.
In one of its more positive write-ups, The Hollywood Reporter’s Stephen Farber describes Escape from Planet Earth as “Passable animated entertainment” that is “stronger on humor than adventure.”
The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde was less kind, noting that “The kids in the theater with me never mustered a single laugh or gasp of excitement” and calling the film “a black hole of entertainment.”
Laramey Legel of Film.comis even more to the point with his observation that the film “Has it all for people looking for nothing.” Ouch.
Megan Fox to star in ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’
Michael Bay has announced via his websitethat he will reunite with Megan Fox for his upcoming alien-flavoredTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. There's no word yet on who Fox will play, but it seems almost certain she’ll take the role of reporter April O'Neil.
The good news is that Bay will not be directing TMNT, only producing it. The bad news is that the director is to be Jonathan Liebesman, who delivered the filmic abortions Battle Los Angeles and Wrath of the Titans. In case readers still care, the film will begin shooting in April and is currently scheduled for release on May 16, 2014.
‘Ben 10’ movie gets a writer
It was announced in 2011 that producer Joel Silver was working to bring Cartoon Network’s Ben 10 to the big screen. The project has been developing ever since, and now The Hollywood Reporter has it that Ryan Engle has been hired to rewrite the screenplay (which was previously drafted by Albert Torres).
The kids’ TV series is about a boy, Ben Tennyson, who discovers a strange wrist watch that allows him to transforms into 10 different aliens with super powers.
Engle is best known for his work on the forthcoming video game adaptation Rampage.
Expect a 2014 release.

J.J. Abrams to make ‘Half-Life’ and ‘Portal’ movies?
Big screen versions of the Half-Life and Portalvideo games may be on the horizon. Polygonreports that Gabe Newell – managing director of game company Valve – joined director J.J. Abrams on stage at the recent DICE Summit where the pair dropped hints that they are to team up creatively.
"There's an idea we have for a game that we'd like to work with Valve on," said Abrams, who recently signed-upto helm the new Star Wars movie for Disney and LucasFilm.
"We're super excited about that," Newell added, "and we also want to talk about making movies, either a 'Portal' movie or a 'Half-Life' movie... What we are actually doing here, we are recapitulating a series of conversations going on. We reached the point that we decided to do more than talk."
The first Half-Life game was released in 1998 and follows a theoretical physicist, Gordon Freeman, who opens a dimensional rift between a New Mexico research facility and a world of alien monsters called Xen.
Portal, meanwhile, is a spinoff of Half-Life released in 2007. In it, a test subject named Chell is forced to navigate a rival research company's laboratories armed with a device that can open portals through space.
