Thirty Thoughts From This Week

The NBA world was filled with crimes of passion, crimes of violence, and crimes of non-action. Between Rajon Rondo filling in for Kim K., The Spurs taking the night off(and still almost winning), Harden's return to his boys, and the Lakers still losing, it was an exciting week of basketball. Here are thirty thoughts from this week; one for each team.(Yes, I even managed to write one about the Suns. Trust me, I'm not happy about it either.)

(Now boys, please play nice.)

1. Despite having the best record in the NBA, the Grizzlies rank just 16th in both assists and rebounds. While Michael Conley is more of score first point guard, it is a bit shocking that they don't rank higher with the likes of Randolph and Gasol.

2. The fine against the Spurs is ludicrous. Yes, I understand the NBA schedules these games for the fans. And yes, the NBA is a product that they need to sell. But would you rather have a healthy Spurs in the Western Conference Finals when ratings matter the most, or having the promo the lineup from last night for seven straight nights in May? Pop has every right to be upset.

3. The Heat need to be the teensy bit worried that they allowed that Spurs lineup to drop 100 on them. "Stopping Nando de Colo and Gary Neal" usually isn't on the "Keys to a Championship" bulletin board.

4. The Nets have started off 4-0 in the division, including two wins over the Celtics. For a team looking to gain a strong fan base, beating the Division giant twice in two weeks is a great start.

5. Ok, so Amare says he's alright coming off the bench. If this is true, the Knicks could be even dangerous bringing out a bench lineup of Pablo, JR, Novak, Amare and Sheed. I think there are a few teams who would happily trade their starting lineup for those five.

(Amare seems at peace with being a 6th man. Or at least that's what he is telling us.)

6. This is now the third situation in a year where Rondo's emotions caused a suspension. While in the grand scheme of things 2 out of 82 isn't bad, when do the Celtics realize that too much passion can be a bad thing?

7. The chances are looking better and better than Andrew Bynum could actually never play a game for the Sixers. With his current contract up next year, it wouldn't be a surprise from the unpredictable Bynum is he went elsewhere next year. Good thing they already have a future all-star in Jrue Holliday, who has career highs in every major category.

8. The Raptors need to get Ed Davis and Terrence Ross more minutes. They are the future, not Andrea Bargnani. When you are 3-12, you mine as well start looking elsewhere.

9. The Bucks come off the emotional win against the Bulls with a stinker against the Knicks. A team that has shown flashes of brilliance has also showed multiple times how new they are to the big moment.

10.  If Joakim Noah isn't an all-star, the game shouldn't happen. He is averaging just under a double double on a team where he is usually the 4th offensive option and rarely has any plays for him. If only the NBA had a hustle award. (Did I really just praise Noah. God, I'm sorry Boston.)

11. Just like that, the Pistons have five wins. If they are going to salvage the season after the awful start, Kyle Singler becoming a consistent scoring option is a great place to start. Also, could playing Monroe and Drummond at the same time be a nightmare? It could prove dividends for a team looking for a defensive identity.

12. When your coach can literally only compliment one player after a game, it has to show some frustration. But Byron Scott needs to be thinking long term: use the Irving injury to teach the younger Cavs to handle big moments. Phase one of that: not saying they suck.

13. The Hawks are quietly the winners of six straight. Be weary of not giving them too much credit however, the Bobcats(twice), Kings, Wizards, and Magic were all a part of that streak.

14. While Charlotte proved that they are still very much a work in progress against the Thunder, no one, and I mean NO ONE, had them at .500 after 14 games. Six out of the next nine at home is a great opportunity to prove you are worth a second look.

15. Orlando is 3-7 in their last ten. In those ten games, they have averaged just 89.6 points per game, and that includes an overtime period. The Magic need a create on his own shooter if they are going to change how their offense runs.

16. The Curse of Voldemort is over: The Wizards have won a game. Now that the spell is over, this team needs to look into building itself around the John Wall return. The first step should be to fire the coach that never wanted to be there in the first place. Stan Van Gundy, anyone?

("Bro, I could see us getting five, six, even seven more of these.")

17. Oklahoma City does not know how to host a friend in return. A dominating performance against the Rockets not only exposed how to beat Harden(run at him like wild men), but proved that this maybe was the right choice.

18. The Jazz are the Hawks of the East. Nobody watches them, you never see them, yet they are slowly working their way into a groove. They are 7-3 in their last ten after a 2-4 start.

19. The Nuggets are better than their 8-8 record shows, and the win over the Grizz in Memphis proved that. They have four losses by five points or less. But for a team looking to be more than a first round exit, you have to learn to win those close games now.

20. Kevin Love is back, and Ricky Rubio is doing full contact drills. While the injuries have mounted in Minnesota, they still need to be thinking the time is now. I still fully believe Minnesota is a 7 or 8 seed come playoff time.

21. Is the loss to the Wizards a low point for the Trailblazers? For a team to be 6-9 while having the highest scoring starting lineup in the league, Portland needs to be looking towards their bench to get any kind of offensive production. Maybe more minutes to rookie Meyers Leonard?

22. The Warriors have wins over the Clippers, Nets, Nuggets and Hawks, and only have one inexcusable two point loss to Sacramento. Despite this great start and a first place spot among the Pacific, the news about Bogut has to be deflating. is Festus Ezili good enough to handle a starters role for 82 games?

("Soo....maybe I was more injured than I first told you.")

23. The Clippers finally stopped the skid with a win over the T-Wolves. The question definitely remains: Have defenses figured out Blake Griffin? Deandre Jordan may end up being the better low post option long term.

24. New coach, same problems. The Lakers look lost on defense, and look like they are playing street ball on offense. While Kobe is shooting out of his mind, long gone is the confidence that Pao Gasol was playing with in the Olympics this summer. If anyone goes, it has to be him.

25. I said I had something for them, so here it is. The Suns are currently last in the league in opponents PPG, and are third to last in opposing field goal percentage. This looks even worse when teams like Charlotte, Orlando, and Detroit have all dropped 115+ on you.

26. The Kings aren't getting blown out of games anymore, but still don't know how to play together on offense. For a team who finished 26th in team assists last year at 21 a game, a regression to 18 a game is not going to make this team better.

27. The Rockets have had a tough week emotionally. With no return really in sight for McHale, you want to root for them. They are definitely better than what they showed in OKC. Long plane rides are not, teams have figured out this backcourt. Making Harden handle the ball and turning Lin into a jump shooter is not a good look for the Rockets.

(We at the Pick and Pop are wishing Kevin McHale and his family the best in this difficult time.)

28. The Mavericks may have found something in getting guys who want to play for something. Could one year contracts be the new trend in free agency? While a blowout loss to the Bulls was ugly, this team is still a "definitely don't want to see" in round 1.

29. The Hornets are holding their breath that the recent injuries to Davis are bad early luck and not a sign to come. It's hard to tell how good this team can be when Davis hasn't even played half of their games. Ryan Anderson is proving he was worth every dollar, and should be a Hornet for a while.

30. The Pacers win over the Lakers was might have been a bigger win for them than it was a loss for the Lakers believe it or not. Before that win, you have to think they were in dead heat for underwhelming team of the year award with the Celtics. Games at Chicago, Golden State and Oklahoma City in the next week requires the confidence they got from that game.

Setting Aside Our Nets

I'd never heard of Mark Frank until coming across a portion of one of his sermons, on St. Andrew, in Celebrating the Saints, a collection of daily spiritual readings which follows the calendar of the Church of England.

Mark Frank or Franck (1613–1664) was an English churchman and academic, Master of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Baptized at Little Brickhill,  Buckinghamshire, he was admitted pensioner of Pembroke College, Cambridge in 1627, elected to a scholarship in 1630, and to a fellowship in 1634, having become M.A. the same year. In 1641 he became B.D., and was chosen junior treasurer of his college, and senior treasurer in 1642. He had attracted the favorable notice of Charles I by a sermon he preached at Paul's Cross before the lord mayor and aldermen in 1641, which the king commanded to be printed. In 1644 he was ejected as a malignant by the parliamentary visitors, because he refused to take the Solemn League and Covenant.

Frank was re-established in his fellowship in 1660 after the Restoration, and was rewarded by ecclesiastical promotions. In 1661 he was made D.D. by royal mandate, and was chosen master of his college in 1662, succeeding Benjamin Lany. Archbishop William Juxon appointed him one of his chaplains, and he held the office of domestic chaplain and ex-officio licenser of theological works to Juxon's successor, Archbishop Gilbert Sheldon, by whom he was presented to the archdeaconry of St. Alban's, and to the treasurership of St. Paul's Cathedral in 1660. He was also presented to the rectory of Barley in 1663 by Matthew Wren. He died at the age 51 in 1664, and was buried in St. Paul's Cathedral. His Course of Sermons for all the Sundays and Festivals throughout the Year was published  in 1672, and was later republished in the library of Anglo-Catholic Theology.

Here is the portion of his sermon on St. Andrew which first attracted me: "And alas what have we, the best, the richest of us as highly as we think of ourselves and ours, more than Andrew and his brother: a few old broken nets? What are all our honors but old nets to catch the breath of the world? What are our estates but nets to entangle us? What are all our ways and devises of thriving but so many several nets to catch a little yellow sand and mud? What are all those fine catching ways of eloquence, knowledge, good parts of mind and body, but so many nets and snares to catch others with? The rational soul itself we too often make but a net to catch flies, petty, buzzing knowledges only; few solid sober thoughts. And our life itself, what is it but a few rotten threads knit together into veins and sinews, its construction so fragile that the least stick or stone can unloose it or break all to pieces. O blessed saint of this day, that we could but leave these nets as thou didst thine; that nothing might any longer entangle us or keep us from our Master's service! Follow we St. Andrew as he did Christ; follow him to Christ, cheerfully and without delay, and while it is today, begin our course...let Christ be your business, his life your pattern, his commands your law..." (Celebrating the Saints, compiled and introduced by Robert Atwell, Norwich: Canterbury Press, 1998, p. 453)

Helena Bonham Carter's Kids Want Her To Marry Tim Burton

Helena Bonham Carter's Kids Want Her To Marry Tim Burton

Helena Bonham Carter is finally considering marrying her partner Tim Burton because the couple's children have voiced concerns over the status of their parents' relationship.
The actress and the director have been together for 11 years, and they are parents to two children, Billy, nine, and Nell, four, but they have never made their relationship official.
However, the Harry Potter star admits they have to consider exchanging vows for the sake of their kids because their son Billy only recently discovered his parents are not married.
Carter reveals the youngster assumed his parents had tied the knot after seeing a picture of his mother wearing a long dress on the set of the couple's 2007 movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
She tells fastmazaa.blogspot.com , "Yes (they do want us to get married). Nell wants a dress, but actually, Billy was the one who was worried. He said, 'Are you part of our family?' And I said, 'Yes'. Then he said to me, 'But you were married. What about the wedding photo?' And, of course, he was referring to a photo of me in costume for Sweeney Todd, where Tim and I were just playing around. Billy thought that was our real wedding photo."
Asked whether the couple will now be getting married for real, she adds, "We might do."

Bill Nighy Calls For Malawi Aid From U.k. Government

Bill Nighy Calls For Malawi Aid From U.k. Government

British actor Bill Nighy has called for increased aid for residents of Malawi following a recent visit to the African country.
The Love Actually star travelled to the nation in his role as an Oxfam ambassador to witness how the organisation has helped locals.
Nighy wants the U.K. government to invest extra cash into programs to address the Hiv/Aids epidemic in the country, and has urged bosses at pharmaceutical companies to make more medicines available.
Speaking to British Tv host Kate Garraway, he says, "I've been in Malawi, which is one of the poorest countries in the world. I went there on behalf of Oxfam, for whom I'm an ambassador, and I visited a hospital and I visited a school, and I visited other places, an Hiv centre, with a view to witnessing the fact that the money does get through and also to come back to report that they need help and they need it desperately.
"Next week is the government's Autumn Statement (an address made to parliament about economic forecasts) and we are hoping passionately that they will announce that they are extending their aid to Malawi and that there is longterm aid in the works because they need longterm stuff...
"They need to be able to plan for the future. There are a million people in Malawi with Aids currently, 650,000 of them don't have the medicines. It's a matter of life and death... it's a death sentence.
"We have everything, we have to deliver it to them. We have all the medicines they need, the pharmaceutical companies and everybody could combine to make this problem go away."

David Walliams Wants Normal Baby Name

David Walliams Wants Normal Baby Name

British funny man David Walliams has vowed to shun the celebrity trend for unusual baby names because he is convinced calling his unborn child "Apple" or "Peaches" would be a "curse".
The Little Britain star and his model wife Lara Stone are preparing to become first-time parents, and he is adamant their baby won't be given an odd name.
He tells , "It's very hard because you have got a long time to think about it. But it's a bit of a curse if you're called Apple or Peaches or something like that. I think we are just going to go with a normal name."
Walliams, 41, goes on to voice his delight about becoming a father, adding, "I'm really excited about it because I've been writing children's books and you get to that age when a lot of your friends have kids and you start thinking, 'When's it going to happen to me?' It's lovely, it's a wonderful thing. We were just thinking about it now we're married and I'm quite old - I'm 41 - so I thought I better get on with it."
He adds of his wife, "Lara is great. I think that a woman is never more beautiful than when she is pregnant."

Alexander Wang is to become the new creative director of Balenciaga.
The New York designer will take over the helm of the French fashion house next week, replacing Nicolas Ghesquiere, who will officially exit today (30.11.12).
According to WWD, the choice of Wang suggests Balenciaga want to tone down the elitist, couture-like approach of Ghesquiere, and open up to a broader audience.
Wang - a designer prized for his sportswear approach and youthful energy - has previously said: ''Although we are an American brand, I think that is more to the sense of what is American sportswear, and things that feel very accessible and easy to wear. But at the same time we really see our audience and our consumer as a global citizen, someone who isn't defined by where they live or what kind of music they listen to, things like that. It's a sensibility that is much more individual.''
Balenciaga officials had no comment on the reported appointment while Wang officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Danny O'Donoghue understands why rock stars do drugs

The Script's Danny O'Donoghue says touring the world can be gruelling, and he can he understand why some rock stars turn to alcohol and drugs.
Danny O'Donoghue understands why rock stars turn to alcohol and drugs on tour.
The Script frontman - who is currently touring the US with the band - thinks life on the road can be boring and empathises with rockers who rely on booze and drugs to get through their arduous schedules.
He told the fastmazaa.blogspot.com : ''Being on the road can drive you mad. A lot of people have likened it to being in jail. I think that's why a lot of rock stars take to drink and drugs - to take their minds off the craziness.''
Although the 32-year-old singer doesn't mind partying a little himself, he warns moderation is key and is careful not to fall into the pitfalls of other stars.
He said: ''It's a hard balance to strike because you need to be in the best physical shape you can.''
Danny also credits bandmate Mark Sheehan - who completes the band with Glen Joseph Power- with helping to keep him in check.
He added: ''I vowed I'd never leave my mother, but then puberty hit and I met [Mark]. My mum would say, 'You look after him' and he's kept me in line over the years.''

Do The Spurs Deserve Discipline For Sitting Core Players?

Commissioner David Stern thinks so as he said in a statement that they face "substantial sanctions" for benching Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Many Ginobili, and Danny Green in last nights contest against the Heat. Obviously, this calls into question the integrity of the game as a team pretty much conceded a game (although it ended up being a close game 105-100 Heat victory).  The biggest issue at stake for the league office here is that fans paid good money to go to a game, hoping to see a match-up between two NBA powerhouses.  What they got instead was there hometown Heat facing the Spurs B unit lead by Tiago Splitter, Gary Neal, and Nando de Colo (who?).  While these players fought hard and kept it close until the Heat buckled down in the final minutes, it definitely was not what the fans had hoped for.  This I understand, and from the NBA's standpoint I can understand there frustration, however I side with the Spurs here.

"Count my rings David Stern.  One game in November is not important,  I coach for April, May, and June"

Who's to decide NBA rotations for a team? Obviously it's the teams' coaches.  So Pop could have avoided this by playing his stars for a few minutes coming out of either half, but really, what's the point in that. He made the decision that it was better for his team in the near future (Saturday in Memphis) and in the long term (playoffs) to have his players well rested. I don't think it's for the league office to decide who needs to play and with an 82 game season, one game is just not that important.  The Spurs were playing in their 4th game in 5 nights, there 11th road game in November, and have an aging roster; for Pop it didn't make sense to wear out his guys this early in the season.

While I understand where the league is coming from, I strongly believe it is the coach that has the ultimate right to make decisions he feels are best for his team if there are vying for an NBA championship.  This is not benching players to get the first pick in the draft, nor did he try and lose this game. I don't doubt Stern will do something, whether it be suspend Pop or fine the Spurs, but from my point of view, any sanction is wrong. You can be sure, that he won't be the only coach to rest his players this season, however i don't know if anyone else will bench 4 of their top 5 players.

We will let you know once we hear word from the league office on this....more to come.

Kim Kardashian wore a figure hugging cut out dress in Kuwait

Kim Kardashian wore a figure hugging cut out dress in Kuwait

From what I know of Kuwait (which is honestly not that much), it’s one of the more “modern” countries in the Middle East. Which means a lot when you’re talking about women’s issues, specifically when seen through the prism of Islam. Still, if I was visiting Kuwait, I would still make the effort to dress and act conservatively. I’m not saying I would wear a hijab, I’m just saying… I would cover my cleavage and try to show some modesty out of respect. When in Rome, and all that. Or “when in Kuwait City” as it is.

So here are some photos of Kim opening a Millions of Milkshakes shop at a huge mall in Kuwait City yesterday. True, this outfit is “modest”… for Kim’s usual trashy, showy style. But I’m still kind of uncomfortable with all of the skin she’s showing. Maybe that’s wrong on my part… maybe what she’s doing here is incredibly feminist, only in a fame whore-y way that is hard to recognize. Kuwaiti religious figures are pissed off because… you know. She’s a twice-divorced, scantily-clad woman famous for a sex tape. Kuwaiti cultural activists are pissed off too because Kuwait regularly bans artists, musicians and actors from entering the country and Kim’s entrance is being called an “unacceptable hypocrisy.”

Something nice: Kim was mobbed by fans at the shop opening, and I genuinely think it’s nice that she made the effort to personally go to Kuwait to open a milkshake shop. You know? Real celebrities (meaning, movie stars) wouldn’t do that. Kim posed for lots of photos, she signed autographs and made milkshakes. She has fans there, and she treated them with respect.

Next stop for Kim… Bahrain. And the Bahrainis are PISSED. Bahrain’s Parliament tried to pass a resolution banning Kim from stepping foot on Bahrain’s soil, but the resolution didn’t pass. I wonder why it didn’t pass? Could it be that many of the politicians actually watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians?

"Never Call Me A Saint"

Dorothy Day spoke those words, I believe, out of her great humility and distaste for worldly honor. She was the first to admit some of her glaring human faults, even in the midst of those whom she helped, as her diaries [The Duty of Delight, Robert Ellsberg, ed., Marquette University Press, 2008] well attest. Somehow, I suspect that, in God's eyes, the magnitude of suffering she experienced during her life more than made up for them.

Dorothy died on November 29, 1980, and on a card found in her final journal St. Ephraim the Syrian's Prayer of Penance summed up her deep religious spirit: "O Lord and master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, faintheartedness, lust of power and idle talk. Yea, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother, for Thou art blessed from all ages to ages. Amen."

Despite her strong feelings about not wanting to be considered a "saint", the U.S. Catholic bishops decided recently to push her cause for canonization. A long-time admirer of Dorothy Day since my college days, I'm with the bishops on this one. Her very human life and example can only give tremendous inspiration to many thousands of us ordinary folks who have known spiritual failure as well as abundant blessing. Join me in praying for the time when we can ask the intercession of "Saint" Dorothy Day.

'Dark Skies' Vs. 'Dark Skies'

From the Creators of the Original “Dark Skies” (NBC, Sony)

Written by Bryce Zabel & Brent V. Friedman
November 29, 2012

Friends and supporters have been contacting us, many with congratulations on how our “Dark Skies” has been made into a new film, starring Keri Russell, to be released by Dimension Films next February. While it sounds like a dream, we tell them, it’s actually a nightmare.

To set the record straight, we’re Bryce Zabel and Brent Friedman, the two writer/producers who created the NBC series called “Dark Skies.” It was produced by Columbia TV (now Sony) and aired in 1996 and 1997. We wrote the pilot, multiple episodes and produced all twenty hours that were aired in primetime on Saturday nights.

Our original “Dark Skies” introduced viewers to an alien invasion that featured a continuing focus on the mysterious and terrifying abduction phenomenon. So our well-intentioned friends can be forgiven if they hear about the Dimension Films version that focuses on an alien abduction and assume we had something to do with it. While that is decidedly not the case, our definitive version may have inspired it.

Our “Dark Skies” had been in the news even before Dimension decided to use our title for their film. Our series was given a world-wide release on DVD in 2011 from both Shout Factory (US) and Medium Rare Entertainment (UK). In dozens of reviews, the work received critical praise as a classic that has stood the test of time in the sci-fi and UFO media. It also spawned new interest in the reboot of our series, something that we were talking to Sony TV about when the news from Dimension Films broke.

Our "Dark Skies" has established itself in the minds of a significant number of science fiction fans as a gripping piece of conspiracy drama set in the world of UFOs and abductions. It anchored NBC's Saturday night "Thrillogy" concept in the 1996 season premiere and starred Eric Close ("Nashville") and the late film character actor J.T. Walsh (“Sling Blade”). Its main title design won the Emmy award and its pilot screenplay received a Writers Guild nomination. The Syfy Channel aired the entire series multiple times. Since 2010 there's been a Facebook page where thousands of fans from many different countries push Sony for a TV revival.

And yet here we are. A film in the same genre as our work is being promoted right now using the same exact title as our work. Most Hollywood businesses legitimately consider creative and artistic interests and rights in these cases. This one seems to have slipped through the cracks of acceptability.

Supporters of the creative rights of writers should ask Dimension Films to let their film stand on its own merits and call it by a different title. "Dark Skies" is taken.

Selena Gomez Allegedly Assisted Set Up Taylor Instant and Harry Styles

Selena Gomez has fought to keep her relationship with Justin Bieber unchanged. But that hasn't ceased the musician from allegedly boasting about her capability to set up the newest (and hottest) pop celebrity many in town: Taylor Swift and Harry Styles.

According to Entertainmentwise.com, Gomez wants to take credit score for Designs and Swift's flourishing connection. The chit chat website says the Monte Carlo star has "reportedly been informing anyone who will pay attention the 'Haylor' was her concept." While this isn't the most efficient resource out there, the story's credible given Gomez and Swift's near connection of their own.

It's reasonable to believe that at some aspect Gomez has provided Swift relationship guidance. After all, what good are friends for if not to point you in the right dating direction? And what do you know, on November 18, just a few days after Swift and Styles' X-Factor rendezvous, Gomez and the country star were spotted out at dinner together.
