On Monday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) took the lead in pushing for war against Syria, stating that if America failed to take military action on Syria, it would be “catastrophic.” McCain met with President Obama on Monday, alongside Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). Graham said he now thinks that Obama has a “solid plan” to “upgrade the opposition” in Syria. McCain said, “We still have significant concerns but we believe there is in formulation a strategy to upgrade the opposition.”

That is a reversal from Saturday, when McCain and Graham released a joint statement blasting Obama’s “limited in duration and scope” plan: “we cannot in good conscience support isolated military strikes in Syria that are not part of an overall strategy that can change the momentum on the battlefield, achieve the President's stated goal of Assad's removal from power, and bring an end to this conflict, which is a growing threat to our national security interests.”

McCain and Graham have long been advocates of more wide-ranging American involvement in Syria, despite the fact that al Qaeda backs the Syrian opposition.
